About the Project

In honour of International Women’s Day 2026, Held on March 8th, 2026, WINGS carried out a Back to School Outreach for children of women and girls living at New Kuchingoro IDP Camp in collaboration with our partner, Selara Regalia, an international fashion brand. The outreach grew out of a simple but urgent reality: for many families in the camp, sending a child to school is not a given; it is a daily struggle shaped by poverty, displacement, and a lack of basic infrastructure.

The Challenge

Education for children in the camp is often disrupted long before a school day even begins. Many of the structures available to them are dilapidated, classrooms with cracked walls, leaking roofs, and little in the way of desks, learning materials, or safe, functional spaces to learn in. For the women raising these children, often as sole providers, the challenge runs deeper still. Displacement has stripped away stable livelihoods, leaving many mothers unable to afford the basics of schooling, uniforms, books, fees, even when the will to see their children educated is strong.

For these women, watching a child stay home from school is rarely a matter of choice. It is the weight of circumstances beyond their control, and a reminder of just how far the road to opportunity still stretches for families in displacement.

Objectives

  • To ease the financial and material burden on women struggling to keep their children in school.
  • To provide school supplies and support that directly ease the barriers preventing children in the camp from accessing education.
  • To mark Women’s Day 2026 by standing in solidarity with the mothers of New Kuchingoro IDP Camp, honouring their resilience in the face of these challenges.

The Work

Through this outreach, WINGS engaged directly with families in the camp to understand the specific barriers keeping children out of school, and provided support to help lighten that load. It was a chance to see, up close, the resourcefulness of women determined to give their children a future, even while navigating dilapidated schools, limited resources, and the daily uncertainty of displacement.

Impact

The Women’s Day 2026 x Back to School Outreach reaffirmed WINGS’ commitment to supporting not just the women in the programme, but the families and futures they are working to build. It is a reminder that empowering a woman often means empowering an entire household, and that access to education, however small the support, can be the difference between a child staying home and a child walking through a classroom door.
