About the Project

Held on May 13, 2025, Farm in Your Yard is a climate resilience initiative designed to introduce women and girls at New Kuchingoro IDP Camp to the power of small-scale, sustainable farming,  right where they live. The project combines environmental education with hands-on gardening, helping participants transform limited yard spaces into sources of food, income, and healing.

Objectives

  • To equip displaced women and girls with practical knowledge of sustainable farming and eco-friendly practices adaptable to small or limited spaces.
  • To promote food security and self-reliance by encouraging home-based cultivation of vegetables and herbs.
  • To strengthen participants’ connection to the environment and build climate resilience within the camp community.
  • To use gardening as a tool for mental health and psychosocial well-being, offering a calming, restorative activity amid the stresses of displacement.

The Work

Through Farm in Your Yard, participants learned the basics of soil preparation, planting, and sustainable growing techniques,  skills that require minimal space and resources but yield lasting impact. Beyond agriculture, the sessions created space for reflection and connection, as women and girls worked side by side, hands in the soil, sharing stories and finding a sense of calm often hard to come by in displacement settings.

The simple act of nurturing a plant, watching it grow, tending to it daily, offered many participants more than a lesson in ecosystems. It offered a quiet reminder that growth, however small, is still possible even in difficult circumstances.

Impact

Farm in Your Yard has helped participants build practical skills for food security while fostering a renewed sense of purpose and emotional well-being. It reflects WINGS’ broader belief that resilience isn’t only built through economic empowerment, but also through reconnecting with the environment and one’s own capacity to nurture and grow, a fitting extension of WINGS’ mission: from vulnerability to possibility, from survival to self-reliance.
